Vintage Postcards of the 19th-Century Giants
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a curious trend swept through Europe—and Germany was right at its heart. Postcards and cabinet photographs featuring individuals of extraordinary size became a sensation. These weren’t just casual portraits. They were powerful visual statements that blended wonder, entertainment, and the era’s obsession with physical extremes.
Among the most popular figures were women and men proudly presented with grand titles like “Wera, das schwerste Mädchen Europas”, “Frederike, die junge pommersche Riesin”, and “Elsa, das schwerste Mädchen”. Details like their weight, height, and age were always proudly displayed—270 Pfund, 15 Jahre alt, 173 cm hoch—turning their physical attributes into almost legendary statistics.
These portraits were often printed as souvenir postcards, sold at fairs, markets, or even mailed like trophies of the extraordinary. Some images feature entire families—the “Kolossal Geschwister”—posing together in ornate costumes or simple dresses, always exuding a quiet pride and sometimes even a charming sense of humor.
But why were these postcards so popular?
In that era, fascination with the “unusual” was booming. Traveling circuses, sideshows, and “Freak Shows” celebrated people who defied the norms of appearance: the tallest man, the bearded lady, the conjoined twins—and, of course, those with impressive size.
Germany had its own lively scene, but similar trends could be seen internationally. In the United States and Britain, figures like circus stars and vaudeville performers also became celebrities through photography. It was a time when the camera itself was still a wonder, and so were the subjects it captured.
For society, these postcards offered a way to marvel at human diversity, while for the performers themselves, they often meant a ticket to fame, travel, and a certain financial independence that would otherwise have been hard to achieve.

A Piece of Forgotten History
Today, these vintage postcards are charming historical artifacts. They open a window into how society once viewed bodies, difference, and spectacle. They also remind us of the individuals behind the titles—people who stood proud in front of the camera at a time when the idea of fame and beauty was far different from today’s standards.
Whether it’s Frederike’s sweet 15-year-old face, Wera’s determined expression, or the smiling Colossal Siblings, each card carries a story of resilience, humanity, and a touch of showmanship.
For vintage collectors, these rare images are a true treasure: bold, touching, and deeply human.
